What is STIR/SHAKEN and Attestation A?

STIR/SHAKEN is a framework adopted by the FCC to reduce caller ID spoofing. It works by allowing voice service providers to "sign" each outbound call with a digital certificate indicating the level of confidence in the caller's identity.

Attestation Levels Explained:

  • Full Attestation (A): The service provider knows the customer and can verify they are authorized to use the phone number being displayed.
  • Partial Attestation (B): The provider knows the customer but cannot confirm the legitimacy of the phone number.
  • Gateway Attestation (C): The provider is just passing along the call from another network and cannot verify the source.
